Sky replacement and AI-based skin retouching are on ON1’s list of promised free upgrades, but reading forum comments, some vocal users are grumpy about ON1’s promises of last year. My understanding is you’d need to be shooting RAW+JPEG for this to work.) The new AI Mask, in particular, looks set to go head-to-head with Luminar’s sky replacement, for now at least. (AI Match will try to mimic the settings of your OOC JPEG image in terms of ON1 processing settings for the raw file. To compete with Skylum Luminar, which has a strong focus in artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, AI Match and AI Auto Tone have been added, which add to the previously existing import filter for Lightroom images that selects roughly matching settings in ON1 Photo RAW, of which AI Match seems to be the logical extension. On the other hand, I see left-overs from the cutting room floor, need for clarification and possibly unfinished work. Some of these are undoubtably going to be useful. So on the one hand, I want to congratulate ON1 for curating such an apparently large collection of presets that actually define ON1 processing settings rather than just being a LUT. (This would be important if you had two machines, only one of which supports ON1 PR 2020 while the other has ON1 PR 2019 but you’d like to make some of the same edits on the “older” machine.) If you have a machine that can’t meet those requirements, it’s unclear if you’d be able to use any of the new presets. There are stringent system requirements for ON1 Photo RAW 2020, which I’ll go into later. Whatever settings you make you can apparently also save as your own preset. The new presets, at least, do refer to specific settings of ON1 that you can manipulate after applying the preset. It is important to state that while this video says that your previously owned presets will still be there, it’s left unclear whether new users will also have access to the older presets. Excerpt of the style examples presented on ON1’s promotional product website. “Color twist” seems to be whatever didn’t fit anywhere else, and there’s an equivalent “B&W alternative” category as well, besides “B&W modern” – whatever the criteria were for that. “Culinary” seems like a nice idea that I haven’t seen elsewhere, although I’m mildly sceptical about the notion that one could make styles that apply to one specific genre. “Retro” includes some filters that seem Instagram-inspired (“Nashville”, anyone?). The list of styles includes some obviously inspired by Capture One (“pastel”, “sun glow”, “cool ocean”, “hot desert”, and “deep forest”), at least one that looks likely to come via (AlienSkin) Exposure (“cinema” – although Capture One also has a similarly named category), while another seems to be just simple colour casts (“minimalist”). ON1 Photo RAW certainly adopted the multi-preview feature that’s a hallmark of Exposure and woefully absent in Capture One – to my mind, the one thing that decides whether presets/styles can be usable or merely onerous. Exposure includes film grain simulation, for instance.
Ten years ago, AlienSkin’s slogan for Exposure 2 was, “the closest thing to film since film”. Over 100 new looks and styles were added to Photo RAW in order to compete with Exposure X5, which has a long list of reasonably good ones – and whose origins are rooted in exactly this kind of transformation.
I would go as far as to say that some of the improvements were made in response to particular strengths of various competing programs, as detailed below. I think its feature list gives an interesting guide to where the industry stands and what the competition has to offer.
